Shipwright's Caulking Mallet

Used in conjunction with a caulking iron to force oakum into the seams between deck or hull planks. The caulking was then covered with putty or melted pine pitch in a process known as paying. The fine original example has a polished mahogany head with iron fittings and makes a fine display example from days gone by. Probably early 20th century. Measures: 20" (51 cm)
