P & O Ceramic Bowl by Bakewell Brothers Pottery
The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, which is usually known as P&O, is a British shipping and logistics company which dates from 1832. In 1837, the company won a contract from the British Admiralty to deliver mail to the Iberian Peninsula and in 1840 they acquired a further tender to handle mail to Alexandria, Egypt. In 1847 P&O entered the (then legitimate! opium trade. Mail contracts were the basis of P&O's prosperity until the Second World War, but the company also became a major commercial shipping line and passenger liner operator. Our bowl, finished in white glaze carries an ochre, blue and green pattern and the base has a good clear transfer confirming its origins being the Peninsular & Oriental Steam navigation Company. The bowl was made by Bakewell Brothers England who operated from the Britannic Works, Hanley, Stoke- on- Trent from 1927-1943. The bowl is in good used condition with a few age related marks. Measures 9.75" diameter (24 cm)
